Colorado scrapes through, Kicker survives to walk away

Post by Wildcats »

In a close fought Week One battle Colorado managed to hold off Pacific Division rivals the Everett Hawks in Overtime 17-14 in a rare road win. The two conflicting stories of the game revolved around Rookie QB Nick Davila and Veteran K Jay Feely.

In his premiere Davila had a strong showing despite being sacked 8 times completeing 31 of 47 passes for 388 yards and 2 TDs with no INTs. Despite the hype of second year HB Danny Woodhead Colorado is still having issues with thier rushing attack but no one knows what the real problems is, some blame it on the coaching staff, some on the Woodhead/Glover combo and some on the O-Line. All we can say is it needs to improve, or they need to go completely run-and-gun, if they haven't already.

The second headliner revolved around veteran K Jay Feely, after missing 3 FG's in regulation, including a last second 51-yarder for the win, the rather rabid Colorado fans were prepared to lynch him before he could escape the 'Cats home at World Arena. A strong showing by the 'Cats D in OT and a little offensive work gave him a final shot that he split perfectly, saving both the win and career, not to mention quite likely his life. There has been some speculation regarding the distance of the kicks he attempted in this game, some wonder if the range is just beyond the now aging veterans leg, others if the coaches bothered to consider that very fact.

All in all the first week of the season was a positive, a win, on the road, against a division rival, a good showing by their prime rookie, and the survival of a (somewhat) valued veteran. Could be worse.. There are some down points, the coaching seems suspect, and fans are beginning to wonder if that's the reason for their poor showings the last few seasons.
