BUDDY BOWL 1

Post by KevinGMHON »

Buddy Bowl I:

Finally, the longstanding rivalry between buddies Mike Blank (Fort Wayne) and Kevin Fillman (Honolulu) is going to be manifested in a head-to-head match. As both HON and FWS made it to their conference championships, this match up might have been played in the championship. Unfortunately, the evil Portland Prowlers beat the Hurricanes, robbing Kev and Mike from matching up!

Most of the work will be done on the field. However, some aspects of the game are notable. One, although Fort Wayne is much better, Blank’s group has had difficulty against Kevin’s division. Second, while Fort Wayne had home field advantage during the playoffs, the team now has to travel to play on the Scorching Lavafield of Honolulu’s stadium. Finally, retirements and new faces will have some impact.

The following was written by Mike, with commentary by Kevin.

Matchups:

When HON has the ball:

HON 13th scoring, FWS 4th in scoring against

HON rush offence (9th last year) vs. FW rush D (3rd last year): HON RB ‘Stallion’ Hall surprised the league by winning the rushing title in the last week. The Stallion carried the ball a whopping 320 times with a 4.0 avg. Hall & the Oline has been overlooked: no one has run for over 300 times since Dumas in 2003! Perhaps 320 carries is a record! FW will have its hands full, but retirement of two Oline players for HON might make it easier.

Kev says: I don’t know what mike blank has been smoking since his trip to the dance but hon didn’t lose 2 oline. Pretty much bang on beside that hall is going to b e another workhorse last year he touched the ball 390 times if hall is to be succeful against fw then he has to get pass the dl which is the strongest part of fw. The funniest thing about fw is that they have had great line backers playing for them but always traded them away ( Faulkner, fuhler and jurasin) Can you imagine how good there defense would have been if they had those linebackers back

HON pass offence (18th) vs FW Rush D (3rd): HON didn’t pass that much because it was relying on the ground game. Free-agent QB Perez had a 99.1 rating. Coupled with a 1000-yard receiver Jones, and 612 yards from Hall, this is passing offence is respectable. But, being 18th, can it come back from behind?

Kev says: Ill say it once and ill say it again qb is not that important in a team sport all you need is a consistent qb not a Joe Montana. While the coach has been ridiculed for trading away McDonough Perez has done everything that has been asked from him and more he has only thrown 16 int in his 4 years as a qb. Fw db are probley the least appreciated group on fw team by the coach they play team db over star player db

When FWS has the ball:

FW 8th scoring vs HON 2nd scoring against

FW rush (1st) vs HON rush D (12). RB Coleman narrowly lost the rushing title to HON’s Hall last year, but as a team FWS is supreme. Occasionally FB ‘Bull’Dozier carries the ball for significant yardage into the opposing backfield. Although Hall and FWS’ receiving corps are exciting, FWS’ running game might just hang onto the ball long enough for a win.

Kev says: fw has so many weapons to score its crazy the biggest problem for fourcade is who get the ball and with that being the biggest problem fourcade is going to put up points on hon side Dt alan donnel has to get pressure on the qb he had 15 sacks last year (2nd in the league) or its going to be a long night for the hon def

FW pass ( 13th ) vs HON pass D (2nd ). Larry Ray Willis won the receiving title. WR Marcus Nash is a strong WR2. TE Doering surprised many last year, and HB Coleman had significant receiving yards. Now, when the ball is gunned by the magnificent Fourcade to these players, great things can happen. Some think that the great pass D of HON will save the day, but maybe HON’s opponents didn’t have to pass because they ran so successfully!

Kev says: fw Larry ray wills is the offence and everything goes as he goes so fourcade need to get him the ball quick and a lot the ? is the tight end in fw history the TE has been an after thought but last year it changed so the question is will we see a sophomore jinx occurs on hon side its all up to Richard holt to stop Larry he has been the starting cb1 for 5 seasons so he not shy to pressure situation this will be the biggest battle in the game and just might decided who wins the game

Special teams (written by Kev):

Punting

What can we say on the punting side of the game both punter are the top 1 and 2 in career hon. Justin Silva and few Marty Kent there is only 0.01 yardages that separates the two and the best part is that they were from the same draft so neither side has the advantage in this one

Punt return

hon. side they have the ever dangerous Eddie (touchdown) Brown who is 4th in career punt returns who has taken over that position for hon. since the trade with missippi on fw side Marcus Nash handles the duty while he has been a great 2nd compliment receiver to Larry ray Willis he hasn’t shown much as a punt returner but who need a returner when you have an explosive offence

Kicking
Last year special team player of the year was carlos huerta he has been mister automatic for hon. he is currently 2nd in career with a 75.1 percent in field goals and 99.2 in extra points what more can you ask for he has won more game for gm Kevin Fillman then any other player on his team on fw side they have Adam vandergate a young kicker who has been one of the top and one of the worst he was the top field goal kicker in his rookie year at 82.6 percent but then had the usual sophomore jinx where he only hit 58.3 percent and was dead last he bounced back to a more respectable 5th in the league last year but the question is which Adam will show up interesting note both players played in the CFL before coming to here must be that Canadian water in bodies

Kick return

Hon has had musical chairs in this position since they trade away there kick returner to fw this year will be Fargo salary cap cut Alfonzo browning. On fw side you guessed it the guy that hon. trade wr jojo heath who has been wowing fw with his explosiveness and the uncanny ability to fin the open holes he currently sit 7th in career with 22.0 avg

Congrats

Congrats to Kevin. My team was inside the 10 in the last 2 minutes, and he picked Fourcade off. Good show. It was 3-0 at the half...I guess the defence of both teams gradually got tired.
